Burial Services

Burial is one of the most common end-of-life rituals, and it has been part of human society since ancient times. Although there are many traditions involved in this kind of service, that doesn’t mean there is only one way of having a burial. At Fairmount Funeral Home, we are proud to offer you several burial options and guide you throughout the process. To help you make an informed decision, we have selected some information about our burial services.

What is a Burial?

Burial is a traditional type of final disposition where the deceased is placed into a casket and buried in the ground, or is entombed in an above-ground mausoleum. A grave marker will be placed on the ground so families can visit their loved one’s graves later on.

Traditionally, families will have their loved one embalmed, placed in a casket, and displayed for viewing, however, alternative forms of burial are also becoming popular. In recent years, families have been choosing to have a green burial, or a burial after cremation. This means that the deceased’s ashes are placed into the ground and buried.

Why Choose Burial?

Choosing to have a service is one of the most important things when facing the loss of a loved one. Burial service is a way of honoring and respecting their life, and it allows family and friends to say express their feelings and say their goodbyes, find closure and start their healing process.

Moreover, a burial service gives your family and friends a meaningful place to visit when you want to feel close to your loved one. It can be a personal or family tradition to regularly visit the gravesite to leave flowers, share memories, or simply sit and think about your loved one. The natural aspect of burials is also important, as being around nature can bring people some comfort while mourning their loss. Research shows that being in nature helps regulate serotonin levels in the brain, which helps stabilize our overall mood.

Burial services are also the most traditional form of final disposition for many religions. Especially in Catholicism and Judaism, religions that believe in the physical resurrection of the body, traditional burial services are encouraged

Burial Service Types

Whether you want a traditional in-ground burial or an above-ground entombment in a mausoleum, our funeral home can help you plan a meaningful burial service.

Some burial services you can choose from are:

  • Immediate Burial - A burial without a visitation or service. Your family may decide on this option if your loved one requested that there be no visitation or service.
  • Visitation - Also known as a wake, is a time when family and friends can gather with an open or closed casket at the funeral home or a church before the funeral service or burial. Having a visitation before the funeral service gives people an opportunity to pay their respects to the deceased and express their condolences to their family.
  • Traditional Funeral Service - A service for a loved one that can take place at our funeral home, church, or another location. This service can be customized by a family to honor their loved one's life, and it can include a eulogy, scripture readings, prayers, memorial songs, and other meaningful tributes.
  • Graveside Service - A graveside service can be held instead of a traditional funeral service or in addition to a funeral service. A graveside service takes place at the cemetery and can be a smaller and shorter service gathering before the burial takes place.
  • Celebration of Life Service - This is similar to a traditional funeral service but provides more opportunities for personalization. It can be held after the burial, and so people can continue to celebrate and honor their loved one’s memory.
