History

Fairmount Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematory has been serving Denver area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

Fairmount’s rich and fascinating past stretches back to 1890, the year it was founded. At that time, Fairmount’s 280 acres represented the largest developed landscape west of the Mississippi. Only Riverside Cemetery outdates Fairmount as the area’s oldest cemetery.

Destined to be grand from the start, Fairmount was designed by Reinhard Schuetze, whose success at Fairmount immediately became the talk of Denver. He subsequently designed City, Congress, and Washington Parks, as well as the areas around the Capitol. Today, Schuetze is known as the father of Denver’s park system.

Fairmount is home to Colorado’s most extensive arboretum, filled with numerous Champion Trees and one of the largest collections of Heritage Roses in North America. The cemetery’s two original buildings, the Little Ivy Chapel and the Gate Lodge, are designated historic Denver landmarks. The Fairmount Mausoleum contains one of the largest stained glass collections in Colorado.

Fairmount’s graves read like the who’s who of Colorado history: 19 governors, 11 U.S. senators, notable war heroes, educational pioneer Emily Griffith, philanthropist Helen Bonfils, the Boettcher family, Brown family, jazz musician George Keith, major league baseball player James Moore and so many others. View a list of Fairmount’s famous.

Our Denver Mortuary

For more than 125 years, families have relied on the Fairmount team to ease them through what can be an emotional and difficult experience. Every loss is intensely personal. That’s why we spend the time to gently guide families through the process to help make decisions as easy as possible. We know just how important life’s capstone can be to the departed and to those who remain behind. We want you to look back on this moment as a celebration of a life well lived, instead of just a funeral.

Our mission is to provide our community with preeminent resources to celebrate life.

Fairmount Cemetery, as a nonprofit organization 501 (c)13, all our extra funds go back into keeping our grounds lush and our people well trained. Finally, all Fairmount Board Members live in Denver, and a number are members of the original founding families. This is truly a calling for us—one we take very seriously and joyfully.
